Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are vital to increase safety and tackle Europe’s growing emission and congestion problems. They can make transport safer, more efficient and more sustainable by applying various information and communication technologies to all modes of passenger and freight transport. Moreover, the integration of existing technologies can create new services. ITS are key to support jobs and growth in the transport sector. But in order to be effective, the roll-out of ITS needs to be coherent and properly coordinated across the EU (Source: European Commission homepage, on ITS).

The EU EIP (www.its-platform.eu) project is carried out under the CEF ITS umbrella between 2016 and 2020 to act as a coordinating function for European ITS deployment. An important task of the EU EIP project is to create a common understanding on the current situation on European road transport corridors, and identify ITS deployment measures that could be undertaken in order to improve the performance of these road corridors. In addition, challenges to the required ITS deployment have to be identified together with activities that can be carried out in order to meet these challenges.

As a first step in this process the EU EIP project launches a survey with focus on the perceived needs for ITS measures: Are they needed in order to increase capacity or improve road safety? Or is the primary goal to ensure that road users are well informed, which will support both these aims? The scope of the survey is to get a better understanding of the general driving forces behind ITS deployment, and it is made complementary to previous studies that have been carried out.

With this mail we kindly invite you to participate in this web-based survey (21 questions, 15-30 minutes). You can access the survey directly through this link:

https://www.research.net/r/EU_EIP_ITS_Potential

Complementary information is provided in the appended informative annex, which also includes a printout of the survey. We appreciate your answers not later than 31 May, as the results will be presented and discussed at an EU EIP workshop in Glasgow 8 June, in conjunction with the ITS Europe congress.

The ITS Europe congress that 2016 will be in Glasgow 6 to 9 has now opened their registrations. You can read more and register here: http://glasgow2016.itsineurope.com/

Following an invitation of the Commission, industry representatives and public authorities have today agreed on a shared vision for the coordinated deployment of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) in Europe. This is an important step towards connected cars as C-ITS enable vehicles to communicate with each other and with the infrastructure. This can notably improve road safety and reduce congestion.

Dear Colleagues,

ERTICO office is currently looking at different opportunities on EC H2020 funding calls where we would like to work more actively with public authorities / cities on promoting C-ITS deployment. An ERTICO coordinated proposal on developing an ‘’ITS Knowledge – Sharing – Deployment community and marketplace’’ is currently in development.

EC H2020 funding call – MG 6.3 support action – Deadline: 26 January 2016

The aim of this project is to develop a C-ITS Knowledge – Sharing – Deployment community and marketplace with education – training tools and guidance measures as an instrument to support authorities (at Inter and Intra levels) in the implementation of ITS. In addition, this project will support authorities plans, specify and procure ITS systems, make informed decisions, choose the right technology in order to efficiently deploy ITS.

We would like to welcome you to join this consortium as an associated partner. If you are interested, please fill in the Letter of Support document enclosed in the email and send to Mrs Lina Konstantinopoulou l.konstantinopoulou@mail.ertico.com in scanned version by 11th January. She also remains at your disposal should you require any further information regarding the proposal objectives, work plan and benefits.
Thank you in advance for your reply and looking forward to developing and exchanging ideas with you to further promote C-ITS deployment!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Christmas Greetings

Transport generates 23% of global CO2 emissions from fuel combustion. This share needs to fall to stay within the 2 degree Celsius scenario for climate mitigation. The International Transport Forum launched six concise analyses on critical issues for decarbonising transport for the COP21 climate change conference taking place in Paris.

On the initiative of France, the formal opening of the 22nd World ITS Congress was preceded by a ministers’ roundtable. The event focused on “Prospects for ITS development for the environment and climate protection”.  The Report can be downloaded here:

The Commission is launching the second call for proposals of the Connecting Europe Facility, with more than €7.6 billion of investment to finance transport projects. €6.5 billion are earmarked for countries with Cohesion Fund eligibility.
