Throughout the world, we see that cities are often built by the water, with waterborne transport today – and perhaps more so historically – being a key-way for people and goods to move around. The Nordic-Baltic region has especially been known for its strong connection to the sea and as a progressive maritime realm.
Shipping is – relatively speaking – a climate-friendly means of transport (and fast becoming more so). Automation is a key trend in the maritime sector, with possibilities seen especially for urban and short-sea water transport.
Autonomous and zero-emission vessels and smart technology links with adjacent land-based transport hubs (such as ports and passenger terminals), provide possibilities to help make urban (water) mobility more sustainable, and respond to pressing transport challenges in urban areas. However, it is not sufficient to have future-proof technology solutions. Other issues such as legal frameworks, standardisation, physical infrastructure, and integration within the overall transport network also need to be considered.
